Thermal Conductive Tape Higher Conductivity Doesn’t Mean Better Working Performance 10/25/2017
Today we share with us some knowledge about thermal conductive tape.

Many people have the same concept that higher thermal conductivity of thermal tape means better performance, actually there has been some products marked a thermal conductivity of 1.5w / mk or higher thermal tape on market, however BAISONTECH also have a customer requesting 1.5w / mk thermal tape. Is that possible to make 1.5w / mk  thermal tape? Today let’s deep analysis thermal tape conductivity issue.

Actually, the most importance of thermal tape is not “stickiness” nor “high” thermal conductivity, it it “high temperature adhesion”.  Whether thermal tape can be used, you need to check inch area thermal tape adhesion of weighing 1kg at 80 degrees high temperature, if the tape still keep high adhesion, then it can be regarded as qualified product. Let’s take a look of our product TCT120 thermal tape, although it’s only 1.2w / mk, but it has high adhesion with high temperature 80 degrees 1kg, which is considered as a limit.

 

Currently market selling thermal tape is of alumina 40% to 60% filling rate, thermal conductivity is about 0.35-0.6 w / mk. Simply speaking, the density of 1.4 to 1.8 of the thermal tape k value is below 0.6, while market sold 1.5w / mk thermal tape is not existing, at least the current technology has not yet reached. It is possible to make conductivity value 1.5, but 1.5w/mk thermal tape has poor high temperature adhesion, it may cause machine burning when customer paste it on heat sink, which will be very dangerous.

 

So, when customer ordering thermal conductive tape, please kindly remember that it’s impossible to make an real high qualified 1.5W/mk thermal tape based on current technology. If any seller told you that they have 1.5W/mk thermal tape, it has two cases: 1: the thermal conductivity is real 1.5w/mk, but high temperature adhesion very poor, when product heating, viscosity is greatly reduced and caused thermal tape falling, the consequences is severe. 2: Seller gives fake thermal conductivity, the real conductivity is much lower than 1.5w/mk.
